Power management for energy efficient HPC systems

Abstract : Energy consumption is an important part of HPC systems total cost of ownership (TCO). HPC systems efficiency has improved dramatically in the recent years with better components, packaging and cooling. But even with the new technologies under development for Exascale systems, power consumption is still on the top of the HPC designer challenge list. An optimal power solution requires a tight cooperation of hardware and software management components. System monitoring will measure consumption for all components at a much higher frequency than is today possible. Future HPC system power management software will integrate this information and control HPC system hardware parameters (e.g. processor frequencies, interconnect bandwidth, … ) but also direct the job scheduler. |
