The Square Kilometre Array: Transformational Science Instrument and Big Data Challenge
Paul ALEXANDER
Professor of Radio Astronomy and Director Battcock Centre
Biography : Paul Alexander was an undergraduate and graduate student in the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, UK where he received his Ph.D. in radio astronomy in 1986. He is Professor of Radio Astronomy at the University of Cambridge and Head of the Astrophysics Group in the Cavendish Laboratory. In 2013 he became the first director of the new Battcock Centre for Experimental Astrophysics in Cambridge. His research interests span the astrophysics of galaxy evolution, the physics of radio sources and the design of novel radio interferometers, analysis and management of large data sets. In particular he is currently working on the design of the Square Kilometre Array for which he is the Lead of the Science Data Processor work package and one of the two UK directors of the SKA Organisation. Through his research in Big Data in astronomy he has recently broadened his role to become the leader of the University of Cambridge’s new Strategic Initiative in Big Data. This is an interdisciplinary initiative involving experts across a broad spectrum from the theoretical underpinnings of data analysis, through algorithm development and data handling to legal ethical and political issues of maximising the return from Big Data. The initiative also includes socio economic studies of the way Big Data may be effectively utilised and includes applications from astronomy through the digital humanities to genomics. |
