Digital technology, accelerating the Anthropocene

Among the nine planetary boundaries that define a viable space for humanity, six of them are currently widely exceeded. Digital technology is often seen as a solution to address the climate crisis. However, this carbon-centric view not only ignore the direct impacts of digital technology on other boundaries but also overlooks the indirect effects and rebounds of digital technology, such as accelerating our activities and human production models.

During this presentation, we will also examine the numerous impacts associated with the exponential growth of digital technology and explore possible actions to move towards a more sustainable world.

Biography: Didier Mallarino est un ingénieur de recherche et informaticien rattaché au CNRS au sein de l'Unité d'Appui à la Recherche (UAR) de l'Observatoire en Sciences de L'univers (OSU) Pythéas. Il enseigne également à l’Université de Toulon et co-dirige notamment le GDS Ecoinfo qui agit pour limiter les impacts environnementaux et sociétaux des TIC. Il est l'un des lauréats du cristal Collectif reçu par les membres du GDS en 2023. Convaincu que nous pourrions créer un avenir plus durable, il partage ses connaissances avec le grand public et incite les acteurs socio-économiques à agir avec lui pour atténuer l’impact de la technologie sur notre environnement. Il a notamment participé à la rédaction du Guide de bonnes pratiques numérique responsable pour les organisations, intervient dans de nombreux évènements publics sur les impacts du numérique.
