The New Paradigms of Scientific Visualization

Industrials, researchers and engineers are nowadays constrained to manipulate increasingly important data volumes. Material solutions costs go up faster than their related budget. And research teams and organizations are bound to collaborate with other different entities, whether abroad or on distant national sites.

In this particular context, visualization has become an unavoidable milestone. It is now inseparable from numeric simulation and enables considerable productivity and time gains.

As a real decision-making support tool, scientific visualization thus faces new paradigms. With scientific tools multiplication and their respective evolutions, questions regarding 3D exchange formats norms have risen and must be addressed. Collada or VRML are two examples (among many others) of formats offering different perspectives to different users. Beyond these norms and standards challenges, visualization has also become remote.

Important data volumes constrain users to high performance facilities. Hence the following questions: which solutions are already available? What are their evolutions? And how to best take advantage of these facilities for results exploiting.

Collaborative work has shifted from concept to reality.

Scientific visualization has hence opened itself to collaboration. Nevertheless, specific users have specifics needs, inherent to their own occupations. How to federate these different users profiles in order to meet their respective needs and provide them with an "industrializable" and sustainable solution?

Mature technologies and progressive high performance solutions. Scientific visualization already posses some of its main assets to become imprescriptible. However a certain number of challenges still need to be taken up. The later will be addressed during half a day of exchanges, combining market solutions, experience sharing and collaborative R&D projects presentations.
