Modelling and heterogen data assimilation for fine-scale air quality evaluation

Air quality has become a public health issue, coupled with a considerable financial stake. Its forecast, to take emission reduction measures but also to anticipate public health measures, is fundamental.
Current models make forecast in real time and up to a few days in advance for the main pollutants: nitrogen dioxide, ozone and fine particles. We will present the models currently in place for operational simulations of air quality at the urban scale. We will expose the evolution of models for a better representation of fine scales and a more accurate assessment of population exposure to pollution.
An important way of improvement is the combined use of simulation and observation. Patterns of assimilation of observational data are already in place to integrate data on fixed networks. They allow better computation of the spatial variability of pollution. A limitation of this approach stems from the observation network which consists of a small number of stations with very precise and very expensive instruments. In addition to this network, we will present the new strategy that is taking shape around mobile sensors, sketchy but in greater numbers.
