Abstract : From its inception fifty years ago, Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE), together with CAD and CAM for Product design and manufacturing respectively, has become a core part of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). Today this whole domain undergoes a fundamental and inescapable transformation.

Leveraging the spectacular progress of Artificial Intelligence with Machine Learning amplified by Cloud access and the Internet of Things (IoT), the new generation of CAE 4.0 solutions has redirected the focus of Product innovation beyond its development phase up to certification (PLM), towards its operational performance in service, introducing the new Product Performance Lifecycle™ (PPL) paradigm.

This new demand has generated a fundamental and disruptive transformation of the Virtual Prototype solutions of the preceding CAE 3.0 generation, into “Immersive Virtual Engineering” (IVE) which must now provide an augmented numerical description of the Product, no longer limited to its nominal ‘as certified’ state, but in full virtual interaction with its potential environment in activity, to become its Virtual Twin, immersed, animated and assisted in an interactive or autonomous way. 

When the Virtual Prototype and its Virtual Twin are now connected and timely updated with real data from the IoT, they mutate into the “Hybrid Twin™” This fundamental evolution of the Product full Lifecycle inclusive of its performance in-service and anticipated maintenance needs, is at the core of the expectations of Industry 4.0 and of the exciting promises of the Outcome Economy.

Biography : Dr Alain de Rouvray, Chairman and CEO since January 28, 1991. Chairman of the Strategic Committee, member of the Compensation, Nomination and Governance Committee and member of the Technology and Marketing Committee. Founder of ESI Group Company, Alain de Rouvray has been the General Manager since its creation. He holds an engineering degree from Ecole Centrale de Paris (1967), a degree from La Sorbonne (Economic sciences (1967), and a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Berkeley (1971). Alain de Rouvray started his career as Research Engineer at Ecole Polytechnique (Solid Mechanics Laboratory) in 1972; he then became Director of the Advanced Mechanics Department for the international software subsidiary of CISI Group from 1972 to 1976. In 1973, he founded ESI SA and was the CEO and Commercial Director from 1973 to 1990.
