QUANTUM REVOLUTION IS HERE

Quantum computing with superconducting qubits – Towards useful applications
Stefan FILIPP, Technical Leader Quantum Computing, IBM Research Zurich

Abstract : In the recent years we have observed a rapid development of quantum technologies for the realization of quantum computers that promise to outperform conventional computers in certain types of problems. This includes problems in optimization, machine learning, the solutions of partial differential equations and finite element analysis, but also in the computation of complex many-body physical systems such as molecules or condensed matter. Assisted by conventional computing systems, hybrid quantum-classical architectures may soon allow us to solve some of today’s computational challenges. In this presentation I will highlight recent developments at IBM towards a scalable quantum computing platform integrated into an eco-system of educational (IBM Q Experience) and software development (QISKit) tools. I will further discuss technological progress to meet the stringent requirements for controlling a large number of quantum bits towards useful applications on near-term quantum hardware.

Biography : Stefan Filipp is research staff member at IBM since 2014 when he joined the experimental quantum computing team at IBM T.J. Watson Research lab in Yorktown Heights, NY, USA. He is currently Technical Leader of the superconducting qubit team at the IBM Research – Zurich Laboratory working on the improvement of superconducting circuits for quantum computing.. He received his degree in physics from the Vienna University of Technology, Austria, and the Uppsala University, Sweden for his theoretical work on bounds on quantum correlations and off-diagonal geometric phases. He completed his Ph.D. at the Vienna University of Technology in 2006 with his thesis on the experimental observation of geometric phases in neutron interferometry. For his work he was awarded the Victor-Hess Award of the Austrian Physical Society. Supported by an Erwin-Schrödinger research grant he moved to ETH Zurich to work as Postdoc and later Senior Researcher on quantum computing, quantum simulation and quantum optics with superconducting circuits. He has pioneered the investigation of noise effects on geometric phases with the experimental observation of geometric dephasing effects and the first experimental observation of robust non-abelian geometric phases.
