In situ bioprinting platform for burn and chronic wound repair
By Amélie Thépot, Co-founder and President, LabSkin Creations
The promising results of the BLOC-PRINT project have demonstrated the concept of in situ skin bioprinting and its clear benefit on the speed and quality of healing obtained. They have enabled the development of a medical grade implantable bio-ink to demonstrate the feasibility of bio-imprinting skin cells incorporated in the bio-ink in situ on unearthed deep second-degree burns. The use of a 6-axis automated arm equipped with a bioextruder made possible the bioprinting perfectly adapted to the morphology of the patient as well as to the topology of its wound. This approach has been validated as allowing reconstruction of skin in situ.
The BLOC-PRINT II project proposes to go even further by improving the performance of this breakthrough therapeutic technology, in order to allow it to access preclinical validations under satisfactory conditions of safety and implementation. The objective here is to develop a bioprinting platform using a new generation robotic arm to support on the one hand the bioextrusion of cells from adipose tissue allowing bioprinting of the dermis in order to fill the loss of substance and on the other hand, bioprinting by inkjet in order to deposit epidermal cells on wounds and accelerate healing.
The market addressed in this new project also goes well beyond burns since it includes all types of skin wounds requiring skin grafting, whether acute or chronic, applicable to civilians or soldiers.

Biography : PhD in molecular and cellular biology, Amélie Thépot has worked more than 15 years in tissue-engineering and disruptive innovations. The various French and international companies or laboratories she has worked led her to do cancer research and cell therapy on several types of tissue.
It is by working at Hospice Civils de Lyon alongside Dr Odile Damour that excellence and innovation in cell culture have been instilled. In 2014, eager for new challenges and thanks to the know-how bequeathed by her teacher, she embarked on entrepreneurship and co-founded LabSkin Creations. |
