Modern storage for IA data centers 2025-2030: a dominant architecture confronted by fragmented uses
Chaired by Jean-Thomas Acquaviva, Research engineer, DDN
and Farouk Mansouri, HPC-Cloud-AI senior engineer, LuxProvide

Today, AI is no longer a technological wave, it's an economic reality that is taking a dominant place in the economic investments of countries and organizations. Announcements of the creation of AI data centers continue, with ever-increasing requirements for the storage of data needed to fuel any article intelligence project. From the storage point of view, several technological revolutions have recently marked this universe: on the hardware level with the arrival of Flash, and on the software level with new object-type APIs.

These revolutions seem to be coming to an end, and a common architecture is taking shape. Datacenters are becoming increasingly data-centric, with different computing services attached to a central data space. Because of this centrality, the datahub must meet five main criteria: extreme scalability, uncompromising performance, operational efficiency, 24/7 availability and ease of shared resource allocation.

On the hardware side, storage systems are converging towards massive flash arrays, where magnetic storage is relegated to more or less cold archiving aspects. On the software side, solutions are moving towards a software-defined model, supporting increasingly fragmented access protocols. Indeed, a dominant trend is the multiplicity of requirements in terms of data accessibility, and AI projects are exacerbating this aspect: file systems are still indispensable, especially for training models; machine-to-machine workflows and various “data intelligence pipelines” are driving object-oriented access, and the data consumption mode is evolving with the growing importance of the web-based and cloud consumption model.

In this workshop, we will discuss the technical convergence of storage from the point of view of existing and future AI datacenters, and its impact on data storage paradigms. We will illustrate data consumption models with several industrial use cases.
