TERATEC Forum 2014 Scientific Computing & Open Source: industrial practices for open source software Chaired by Jean-Marie DAVESNES, SCILAB ENTERPRISES et Julien JOMIER, KITWARE Even though open source software is everywhere in our everyday lives, industry is still struggling to enjoy its full benefits. Industrial applications often grow out of academic code, and this is certainly true in scientific computing. Despite everything, when it comes to integration, not all academic code is usable. Their cobbled-together nature, reliance on the continued existence of user communities, issues with technology maintenance and support, and potential contamination from licenses all raise concerns about open source as an industrial solution. That trend is turning around, however. A difficult economy with fierce international competition is driving down the costs related to proprietary licenses in favor of stable, credible open solutions. Based on testimonials from users and providers of solutions, this workshop offered a broad overview of open source practices in industrial fields such as space, aeronautics, energy, medicine, and microelectronics.
