Digital Twins: from "concept" to industrial implementation

The concept of the digital twin isn’t exactly new. Experts still debate the exact definition of the Digital Twin since it can come in many forms depending on the industry and use case.

But everyone agrees on its inevitable expansion in industry, as a new way of interfacing with and anticipating the real world by creating an immersive, accurate digital representation of this real world. Digital twins can transform previously dumb CAD models into dynamic and living system components at the heart of the twin, leveraging the appeal of such investment. They have been identified as a Top 10 Stategic Technology Trend by Gartner in 2018. It is truly a child of Industry 4.0, emerging as a result of the maturity and convergence of technologies, like advanced simulation, IoT, AI and many others like HPC that enable their existence.

Rather than giving THE definition that experts still debate, the Teratec 2019 workshop is adopting an empirical approach: it will present a large range of industrial implementation of what each of them call a “Digital Twin” or “Digital Hybrid” and what benefit they expect of such promising technology. Companies of various industrial sectors, like Energy, Automotive, Aerospace, Building and leading Software Vendors had shared their experience (and the one of their customers), including the hurdles to overcome before widespread adoption, and expected, even gained, assets and benefits. They have presented very different outlooks on the current challenges of digital twin development, as well as different views on how the future of the digital twin will evolve.

At the end of this workshop, each attendee had a quite good overview of Digital Twin strategies, implementation and assets to make his own definition and to assess the stage of complexity we are currently achieving in terms of digital twin technology
